Rangatira Marae
Rangatira Marae is located in Te Karaka on the western banks of the Waipaoa river. It’s a symbol of honour to the words of Te Kooti Arikirangi Te Turuki in the late 1800's. The name of the wharenui Te Whakahau came about from a visit by elders of Te Aitanga a Mahaki to Te Kooti when he was living in Te Rohe Potae, Te Kuiti. Te Kooti uttered the saying, Haere, hoki atu, Whakahautia te Rongopai i runga i Te Ngawari, i runga i Te Aroha. Go back and promote the simple message of the Gospel, using the spirit of charity. A marae built for the Ngāti Wāhia hapū, Te Aitanga a Māhaki iwi. It once hosted the many Ringatū church gatherings of Tekaumārua, Huamata and Pure. It has withstood the elements and the flooding of Bola in 1988. Today the whānau journey to revive and rebuild Rangatira marae for the generations to come.
