TOI MAHAKI
Toi Mahaki is a new collective in the process of being established to support the development of toi Maori within Te Aitanga a Mahaki. This includes all and any discplines of art, including customary (raranga, whakairo, kowhaiwhai, taonga whakarakei etc) to new media (digital, sculpture, uku, adornment etc).
Objectives for Toi Mahaki include:
- To develop, lead, advance and excel creativity and innovation of arts for Te Aitanga a Mahaki.
- Create a database of Mahaki ringatoi.
- Deliver wananga and workshops to build knowledge and create awareness.
- Build capability and capacity for ringatoi.
HIGHLIGHT
Waerenga-a-Hika: Hohou te Rongo Exhibition, Tairawhiti Museum
The most recent exhibition presented by Te Aitanga a Mahaki in partnership with Te Tairāwhiti Museum and Trsut Tairāwhiti, was the 2025 Waerenga-a-Hika: Hohou te Rongo exhibition, marking the 160th year since the siege of Waerenga-a-Hika. The exhibition featured 26 artists, 3 kura, 32 contemporary artworks and 26 taonga on display. Over 300 people attended the opening event with thousands having gone through the exhibition already. The exhibition will be up at the Tairāwhiti Museum until 22nd March 2026.
