In May 2025 the Government announced a partnership with Toitu Tairawhiti in a $75 million development that will deliver 150 affordable rentals in Gisborne, providing warm, dry, sustainable homes in a high-needs region for housing. 

The Turanga Tangata Rite site, beside the Gisborne hospital is where the 150 houses will be built through Toitu Tairawhiti Housing. Te Aitanga a Mahaki is a 25% owner of Toitū which is Chaired by our Mahaki Chair Pehimana Brown - and Annette Wehi is our Managing Director. The first tenants - for affordable renting - will be in by April 2026. A kohanga, maara, food co-op and our Iwi offices will operate here.
